Endometrial Ablation

The endometrium is the inside lining of the uterus that thickens and is shed at the end of the menstrual cycle resulting in a period.  Many times heavy periods can be managed by burning the lining of the uterus using a procedure called endometrial ablation.

One such endometrial ablation technique is the NovaSure®NovaSure® is a one-time, 5-minute procedure that can lighten – or end your heavy period – without on-going pills and hormonal side effects. For over 90% of women, menstrual bleeding is dramatically reduced or stopped. Read more about NovaSure®.

Thermachoice® is another endometrial ablation technique.  Thermachoice® is a one-time, 8-minute procedure that in 81% of women resulted in a lighter or normal period.

Thermachoice® is a safe procedure where a soft flexible silicone balloon is inserted in the uterus. This balloon is filled with fluid that allows it to inflate to the unique contours of the uterus. The fluid is then gently heated and circulated for 8 minutes. When the treatment is completed, all the fluid is withdrawn from the balloon and the catheter is removed. Nothing remains in the uterus. The treated uterine lining will shed, like a period, over the next 7-10 days.

Note: Pregnancy after any form of endometrial ablation is a rare but possible event, and the risk of complications is increased.
