Robotics

The da Vinci robotic system is a state-of -the -art development in gynecologic surgery. The da Vinci system allows the surgeon to complete movements not possible in traditional open or laparoscopic surgery. The surgeon first places ports into the abdomen in a manner similar to laparoscopic surgery. The robot may be “docked.” The arms of the robot are attached to the ports, and instruments are passed into these ports. The surgeon is then able to sit at the robotic controls, which are usually in the same room as the patient. The surgeon is given a three dimensional view inside the patient’s abdomen. The wrist movement of the robotic arms may turn 180 degrees to allow a full range of motion.

When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions. These include, but are not limited to, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding, and ovarian masses.

Patients who bleed easily, have abnormal blood clotting, are pregnant or morbidly obese are typically not candidates for minimally invasive surgery, including da Vinci Surgery. Please ask your physician at the Center for Women’s Health whether robotic surgery is right for you.
